LAA’s 52nd Road Race kicked off the July 4 holiday

LYNNFIELD — The town kicked off the Fourth of July with the 52nd annual Lynnfield Athletic Association 5K Road Race in the center of town.

The road race was sponsored by several local businesses. Although the race helped fund the new track at Lynnfield Middle School last year, this year’s proceeds raised money for scholarships and athletic equipment for Lynnfield High School.

The turnout for this year’s race was larger than last year’s with 383 participants, which was a 14 percent increase from last year. The ages of registered runners spanned from 3 to 78 years old.

Along with registration at Town Hall, people could register online for a “virtual” race. The virtual race allowed out-of-town runners to participate in a 5K in their own location and at a different time while still donating to Lynnfield Athletic Association.

The race started early in the morning, but runners still experienced high temperatures, humidity and blazing sunshine. The weather, however, did not discourage runners.

Dan O’Flynn, a 25-year-old Ipswich resident, finished first in the race with a time of 16:37, which was a pace of 5:20 per mile. O’Flynn, who finished in second place last year, cut 21 seconds off his time this year to move from second to first.

Kaitlin Sheedy, 36, of Arlington, was the first woman to finish this year’s race with a time of 17:47. She finished in fourth place overall.

Nathan Lopez, 14, held his title from the previous year as the fastest Lynnfield resident to finish the race. He came in sixth place with an overall time of 18:37.

The race brought spectators, families and community members at Lynnfield’s Town Hall, complete with a DJ and music as well as tables of water for post-race hydration.

After the race, the winners of the raffles were announced. The raffle prizes included gift cards to Lynnfield High School’s Snack Shack, gift certificates to J.P. Licks and Richardson’s Ice Cream in Middleton, and Lynnfield Superfan shirts – which allow free entry into all Lynnfield sporting games.

The race honored the annual tradition of bringing the community together despite the different levels of athleticism and ages of participants.
