NORTH READING — Who would have thought that in 10 years Turkey Trot runners have logged over 43,000 miles on Thanksgiving Day at the annual event?

That equates to almost 430,000 calories. And it is back again, on Thursday, November 22 at 8 a.m. This year marks the 10-year anniversary of a 5K race that hosts 1,500 runners which is now a tradition in North Reading.

“We had an idea of hosting a race in town before the football game. We hoped for maybe 100 runners and now the race is so popular, we have to cap it at 1,500 runners. It is an amazing event supported by residents and businesses,” said Joe Davis, one of the founding fathers of the race and current director.

Not only has the race grown, so has the interest in sponsoring it. This year commitments have already been made by Farrelly Realty Group, Salon 77 and New Balance. As a sponsor, the company’s name is displayed at the race and it is also prominently displayed on 1,500 t-shirts that are seen year-round all over the Greater Boston area.

“I was walking around Portsmouth this summer and I had to chuckle when I saw a couple both wearing their Turkey Trot shirts…but I thought at the same time, what great exposure our sponsors are getting,” notes Davis.

The event will take place rain, shine or snow, and starts promptly at 8 a.m. This year, participants can sign up for the 5K run or a 1.75 mile run/walk. Athletes will receive a special 10-year commemorative long sleeve t-shirt. All finishers will receive medals and age group winners will be given New Balance gear.

Overall winners in the women’s and men’s divisions will receive the Frederick A. Keyes Memorial Award. Runners will also have the option of buying some 10-year celebration gear including winter hats and sweatshirts.

All funds raised at the event are used for scholarships presented through the North Reading Boosters Club as well as equipment and supplies not covered by normal funds relating to sports in the public schools. Moreover, the school that has the largest percentage of youths participating will receive funds for their own physical education program supplies. Reigning champs, the Little School, will be looking to defend their title.

As part of the commitment to the community, all runners will be asked to bring a non-perishable food item to the pre-race number pick-up. This food will be donated to the North Reading Food Pantry to assist them during the holiday season.
