Emergency Fund tops $43G

  MELROSE — Donations to the Melrose Emergency Fund topped $43,000 this week, surpassing the total amount donated in last year’s fundraising drive. “While we do our main fundraising during the holiday season, the Emergency Fund works year-round to support Melrose families who are going through difficult times,” said Mayor Rob Dolan. “Over the past few months we have not only helped several families with fuel and other bills but also worked with the Melrose Public Schools and local agencies to reach out to families who might otherwise have a difficult holiday season. This important work will continue throughout the year, as we strive to ensure that no one in Melrose goes cold or hungry. City weighs RD’s Deli options...

MELROSE — Local authorities may come down hard on the owner of a Franklin Street market accused of trying to dupe a mentally challenged woman out of Lottery winnings. The owner of RD’s Deli & Market, Chang Cho of Churchill Circle in Winchester, is alleged to have attempted to swindle a local woman out of $10,000 she won on a Lottery scratch ticket. At the beginning of November, the resident thought she had won $1,000 and went to cash the ticket at the deli. The owner reportedly gave her $940 and explained that he had deducted taxes. Thinking this was suspicious — anything over a $600 win must be cashed at a main Lottery office — the resident’s family requested an investigation. MELROSE — Edna K. Harding, 83, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away peacefully at EPOCH of Melrose on Saturday, Dec. 20. Edna was born on Aug. 2, 1931 in Malden, daughter of the late Charles I. and Edna M. (McGrath) Harding. Raised and educated in Malden, Edna lived in Malden most of her life. She worked as a secretary for Dr. Myer Feingold in Malden and for Cunningham Grain Co. in Malden. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Malden. A baseball fan, Edna always loved watching the Boston Red Sox. She was the beloved sister of the late Robert J. Orr and Albert E. Harding. She was the loving aunt of Robert J.
