By MARK SARDELLA WAKEFIELD — Finance Committee member Daniel Sherman says he will move to amend the Town Clerk’s budget by removing the $76,000 Town Clerk’s salary from the budget. The promise came last night as the FinCom reviewed its first round of 16 departmental budgets, including the Town Clerk’s. Town Clerk Mary K. Galvin has been out of work since she collapsed in her first floor Town Hall office on April 8 and spent the next six days in Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. Doctors initially suspected a heart attack or a stroke but ultimately Galvin was diagnosed with emotional stress brought on by certain pressures she felt as she did her job as Town Clerk. Mullen on booster clubs: Let schools pay coaches...

By GAIL LOWE WAKEFIELD — Town Counsel Thomas Mullen has some serious problems with high school booster clubs and their current relationship to coaches. The School Committee this week hosted members of various booster clubs supporting athletics and other extracurricular activities as guidelines are examined and finalized. The School Committee now is expected to vote on those guidelines at its Feb. 11 meeting. Mullen commented on the “serious risk of liability when Booster organizations purport to retain coaches as independent contractors.” Mullen referred to Massachusetts General Law c.149,s.148B, which was substantially rewritten by the Legislature 10 years ago. Because Feb. 1 falls on a Sunday, the real estate and personal property taxes are due the next business day, Monday, Feb. 2. “While we welcome you at the counter, we encourage you to pay online. Dash results in question in M.L. Freedom division title meet By JIM SOUTHMAYD LEXINGTON — There is an old saying that good things come to those who wait. For the Wakefield Memorial High boys’ indoor track team it is still waiting to see if it it won the Middlesex League Freedom division outright or if it had to share the title with Burlington even though the two teams ran in a battle of undefeated teams last night at the Lexington Field House. The event in question is the 45 yard dash where a photo finish was used to try and determine the winner. Originally, Burlington was awarded the first place before the 4×400 relay.
