WAKEFIELD — A 37-year-old Chelsea man was arrested early this morning for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, operating with a suspended registration and giving a false name to a police officer after the officer pulled the driver over on Spaulding Street. According to police, Officer Ryan Doran ran a Registry check on a black Dodge Durango that he observed traveling north on Main Street at about 1:15 a.m. The car registration came back as revoked, and Doran conducted the stop. The registered owner’s license also came back as revoked and the driver initially gave a false name to police. Eventually, police were able to determine the driver’s true identity and arrested Abdirahman Hassan of 235 Webster Ave., in Chelsea. —– Police de-escalated an argument...

Chanley two-hitter leads Unknowns to 1-0 win...

Published in the July 31, 2017 edition. WAKEFIELD — The defending Wakefield Twi-League Champs, The Unknowns squeaked out a 1-0 victory over the Loafers, Thursday night at Moulton Park. Adam Chanley threw a brilliant two-hitter while striking out five. Chanley got outstanding defensive plays from center fielder Brandon Panarese and right fielder Sean Alexander to secure the win. Loafer’s hurler Taylor Robinson was up to the task as well, allowing four hits and one run. Matt Smith was the offensive dynamo for the Loaf, getting both hits off Chanley. The Orange scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Geoff Eriksen led off with a single that clanged off a tree in right field. Walter Tennis Tournament to be held for junior players on August 26-27...

Published in the July 31, 2017 edition. WAKEFIELD — The Geoffrey Walter Memorial Junior Tennis Tournament will take place the weekend of August 26-27 at the Dobbins Courts at Wakefield High School. This is the 15th year of the event being held in Geoffrey’s name. Plans are underway to have three separate age brackets, each for boys and girls: high school, 14 and under and 12 and under. The tournament is geared for both beginner and more advanced players, and will include consolation matches to ensure plenty of play for all participants. Published in the July 31, 2017 edition. WAKEFIELD — Pauline A. “Polly” Berggren, 87, of Wakefield, died on Friday, July 28, at the Bear Hill Nursing Center in Stoneham. Born in Wakefield on August 16, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Mary C. (McGrath) Gammons. Polly was a lifelong resident of Wakefield. She was a graduate of Wakefield High School and worked for Wakefield Insurance Agency and Joseph A. Curley Insurance Agency in Wakefield, retiring in 2013. Polly is survived by her husband Gunnar H. Berggren; her two sons William Berggren of Allston and Robert Berggren and his wife Susan of Wakefield; her three grandchildren: Jillian, Amy, Kara and her husband Billy Sittig, and great-grandson Beau.
