Published in the September 1, 2017 edition MELROSE — Barry E. McCann, 70, of Melrose, died at home with his family gathered at his side on Tuesday, August 29. Barry was born in Winchester on October 7, 1946, a son of the late Ralph E. and Marjorie E. (Jacobs) McCann. Raised and educated in Wakefield he honorably served his country during the Vietnam War aboard the U.S.S. Boxer for the United States Navy as a radio operator. He was married to the late Lee M. (Stafford) McCann until her death on November 2, 2009. Upon return from the service he took a position as a stock-trader for Paine Webber and later for the Herzog Financial Group, where he worked for many years before retiring. Doris M. McAvoy, 88

(O’Connor) McAvoy, 88, of Melrose, died peacefully on August 26.  Doris was born in Chelsea on May 6, 1929 to James and Mary Alice (Flynn) O’Connor. She was raised in East Boston and Winthrop, and graduated from Fitten High School. Doris went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Mt. St. Mary’s College.  She worked as a lab technician at Boston City Hospital prior to starting her own family, and after raising her children Doris went to work as the assistant activities director for the Dexter House in Malden, as a volunteer at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and later as a volunteer ombudsman serving patients at local nursing homes.  Doris married her husband, James, in 1955 at St. John’s Church in Winthrop. Emily T. Hanrahan, 91

Published in the September 1, 2017 edition MELROSE — Emily T. (Heavey) Hanrahan, 91, of Melrose, died peacefully on August 27. She was born in Sligo, Ireland on June 18, 1926 to Thomas and Maude (O’Neil) Heavey. She was raised in Ireland and attended college in Dublin where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting.  Emily emigrated to the United States in 1954 where she would later meet her husband Thomas J. Hanrahan. They were married in June of 1957. Emily and Thomas moved to Melrose in 1965 and have lived there ever since.  Prior to having children, Emily worked at Harvard University Alumni in the Class Reports office. Published in the September 1, 2017 edition JAMAICA PLAIN — Grace Ham, 96, of Jamaica Plain and formerly of Melrose, passed away on Sunday, July 16, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.  She was born on November 29, 1920, a daughter of the late Vahan Terchoonian and Naomi (Krikorian) Terchoonian. Grace was born in Boston and grew up in Chelsea. She graduated from Chelsea High School and went on to complete her associate’s degree at Burdett College. In 1955, she married James L. Ham. Grace worked as a legal secretary for two Boston law firms until her retirement in the early 1990’s. Published in the September 1, 2017 edition MELROSE — Lester Haddock Jr., 94, of Melrose, died Friday, August 25, in Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.  Born on February 26, 1923 in Somerville, he was the only child of the late Lester and Bessie (Proctor) Haddock Sr. Raised and educated in Medford, he graduated from Medford High School and then attended Northeastern University. Les honorably served his country during World War II in submarine service with the United States Navy.  After the war ended he returned to school and graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston. On October 28, 1950 he married Ann E. Taggart in the West Medford Congregational Church and he had been a resident of Melrose for over 60 years.
