New plastic bags ban heads to TM...

Sep 28, 2017 by

Published in the September 28, 2017 edition. By MARK SARDELLA WAKEFIELD — A revised bylaw banning plastic bags from being distributed to customers in Wakefield stores will be heading to the November Regular Town Meeting. A slightly different proposal went before Annual Town Meeting last May, but after much discussion voters referred the matter back to the Board of Selectmen for more study. The board then appointed a Plastic Bag Committee to look at the matter. A prime concern raised at Town Meeting was the impact that a ban would have on businesses, especially small businesses. Town Administrator Stephen P. Maio said that the Plastic Bag Committee included Caitlin Bracken (the high school student who came up with the initial proposal to ban plastic bags), local merchant Rada Frolichstein, Laurie Hunt of the Chamber of Commerce...

Dear Wakefield high

Sep 28, 2017 by

By MARK SARDELLA In the run-up to the Nov. 8, 2016 election that legalized pot in Massachusetts, how many times did you hear the claim that legalizing recreational marijuana would never lead to increased pot use among youth? The denial was wider and deeper than any river in Egypt. “That’s a lie!” they’d scream. “There’s no proof of that,” they’d howl. If you cited a study from Colorado or some other state where weed was already legal, they’d say it had nothing to do with Massachusetts and cite some study by Dr. Cheech N. Chong of the High Times Institute. I’m no genius, but even I predicted that when we legalized pot, more kids would end up using...

Sep 28, 2017 by

Published in the September 29, 2017 edition MELROSE — A 101-year-old woman lost her life in a single alarm fire on Grove Street Wednesday afternoon. The woman’s body was found by firefighters as they conducted a search in the kitchen of a first floor apartment at the multi-family dwelling at 85 Grove St. That is believed to be the area where the fire began. Officials did not release the victim’s name this morning. She was the only one in the house at the time of the fire. The Fire Department received several calls around 3:50 p.m. reporting a fire in the home along the heavily traveled Grove Street near the Walnut Street intersection. Off-duty firefighters who happened by around that time quickly sprang into action. They both realized the smoke and heat were too...

City open to medical pot business...

Sep 28, 2017 by

Published in the September 29, 2017 edition MELROSE — The city plans to court those interested in starting a medical marijuana business here. Mayor Robert J. Dolan said last week he is creating an advisory committee to assist him in evaluating potential operators of a registered medical marijuana dispensary in the designated area on Route 99. He said he has met with representatives from about 10 firms that own medical marijuana dispensaries, most of which were the area. “It is truly medical-based,” said Dolan, who explained he has looked at length into the medical marijuana industry. “It is not a front for people who will abuse the law. There is little or not advertising of these facilities and the security is ridiculously tight.” The Mayor’s Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee will consist of representatives of the...
