McCann-obit_webMELROSE — Barry E. McCann, 70, of Melrose, died at home with his family gathered at his side on Tuesday, August 29.

Barry was born in Winchester on October 7, 1946, a son of the late Ralph E. and Marjorie E. (Jacobs) McCann. Raised and educated in Wakefield he honorably served his country during the Vietnam War aboard the U.S.S. Boxer for the United States Navy as a radio operator. He was married to the late Lee M. (Stafford) McCann until her death on November 2, 2009.

Upon return from the service he took a position as a stock-trader for Paine Webber and later for the Herzog Financial Group, where he worked for many years before retiring. He then worked in various capacities, including bartender and maintenance at the Sgt. Harold O. Young VFW Post #2394 where he was a much liked and familiar face.

He was a hometown boy who loved watching and rooting for all the New England sports teams. He had a keen interest in horses, the races and a game of horseshoes with family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Lee he is predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Donald Giles and Wayne Stafford.

He leaves his siblings, Janice E. Giles of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, David N. McCann and his wife, Susan of Wilmington and Darlene L. Foley and her husband, George of Reading; his in-laws, Jeanne E. Stafford of Melrose, Scott D. Stafford and his wife, Joanne of Wilmington and Dana A. Stafford of Londonderry, New Hampshire; his nieces and nephews, Christopher Noble and his wife, Paula, Michael P. Foley and his wife, Jennifer, Corey N. McCann, Kevin E. Foley, Steven J. Foley and Mark R. Foley; Holly Acosta, Kristy Foote, Amanda Penza, Danielle Justice, Christopher Stafford, Melissa Stafford. Calvin Stafford; his great-niece, Felicity Foley.

Relatives and friends will honor and remember Barry’s life by gathering for calling hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, September 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. and again for his funeral service celebrated on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Beth Horne will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Wyoming Cemetery.
