MUNICH, Germany — The Boston Braves F.C. recently traveled to Munich, Germany where they competed against Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena.  The Braves, founded by Lynnfield native Spiros Tourkakis in 2001, are a members only group of soccer players formed to promote the principles of friendship and camaraderie. The club members come from all over the world to engage in friendly competitions in domestic and international arenas.  The mission of the club is to provide its members with the opportunity to participate in games against other Clubs, to bring together International Football Veteran players and to develop friendships while traveling.  In that spirit, the Braves walked on to the famous Allianz pitch and played the German champion Bayern Munich to a 1-1 tie, supporting the Braves’ philosophy...

Garrett Swasey killed in Planned Parenthood shooting Published in the December 4, 2015 edition  By DAN TOMASELLO COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Melrose High graduate Garrett Swasey was remembered earlier this week as a dedicated public servant who loved his family and faith. Swasey, 44, was shot and killed while responding to a shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado Nov. 27. He was one of three victims killed during the shooting. Married with two children, Swasey worked as a police officer at the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs. He was there when he was called to assist with an active shooter at the nearby clinic. Swasey was a Melrose native who graduated from Melrose High School in 1989. The city paid tribute to Swasey this week as flags were lowered to half...

Each holiday season, the Chamber’s event draws thousands of people to greet the holiday season. A Melrose tradition, Home for the Holidays is a city-wide holiday open house that ushers in the holiday season. On Friday night, the holiday lights will be turned on and Santa will be making his first stop in Melrose. On Saturday, the city is full of fairs, performances, sales, specials and tastings that last throughout the weekend. Melrose Emergency Fund tops $8,300...

Published in the December 4, 2015 edition MELROSE — Donations to the Melrose Emergency Fund have already topped $8,300 this holiday season thanks to generous large and small donations from Melrose residents and groups, including the Kappa Delta Psi sorority and the Melrose Boot Camp. “The Emergency Fund is a way for everyone in Melrose to reach out to help their neighbors,” said Mayor Robert J. Dolan. “We have had some extraordinary situations this past year, and I was happy that the fund was there to help people when they needed it.
