WAKEFIELD — Beginning September 30, JRM Hauling and Recycling will be servicing the town for both trash and recycling management. Little will change for residents, and existing blue trash bins will still be used.

Currently, JRM provides recycling services to Wakefield and Russell Disposal provides trash refuse collection services. Russell Disposal informed the town that it is changing its business model and would not seek to renew its municipal agreement with Wakefield this fall. After careful consideration, JRM was selected to replace Russell for refuse collection services.

Residents may notice that JRM’s trash trucks look different, as the hauling arm for the barrel is located on the back instead of the side, but barrels should still be placed in the same locations and pickup days will remain the same. Although one company will provide both services, trash and recycling pickup will be hauled by different trucks to avoid contamination.

Each residence will still be allowed two oversized trash items each week. Instead of Fridays, however, bulk-item pickup will take place on residents’ regular trash days beginning September 30. Bulky items include car seats, sofas, mattresses, tables, desks, and rugs cut into three-foot wide-sections that are rolled and tied. To schedule a bulk-item pickup, call the DPW 24 hours in advance at 781-246-6301 ext. 4120 or send an email to dpw@wakefield.ma.us.

Once the new contract is in place, service inquiries can be made to JRM Hauling directly at 1- 800-323-HAUL or via the DPW’s service request form, located at https://www.mapsonline.net/wakefieldma/citizen_requests.html. You can also connect with JRM if you have questions about how to dispose of an unusual item.
