MELROSE — Beginning in early November, Melrose residents can recycle clothing, shoes and household items with free curbside pick-up. During the launch at the end of October, every resident will receive a mailer with program information along with two (2) Pink Simple Recycling bags. Simply place your pink bag(s) beside your recycling bin before 7 a.m. on your regularly scheduled trash/recycling collection day. Simple Recycling will leave behind replacement bags for future use.

All collected clothing, shoes and home goods are diverted from the waste stream, reducing tipping costs at the landfill, and will be reused or recycled. By participating in this program, Simple Recycling creates jobs through the collection, sorting and resale of items otherwise destined for the landfill while finding a new life for your unwanted clothing, shoes and home goods. Items that can be put into the pink bags: jewelry, purses, hats, blankets, drapes, pillows, dishes, pots and pans and backpacks. For a list of acceptable items, you can visit their website at www.simplerecycling.com

Without a curbside program, 85 percent of clothing, shoe, and reusable home goods get thrown into a landfill. On average, that results in 21 billion pounds of textile waste in the United State annually.

To request additional bags you can visit their website at www.simplerecycling.com/supplies and for any additional questions you can reach Simple Recycling at 1-866-835-5068.
