MELROSE — On Saturday, October 26, the City of Melrose is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The event will be held at the DPW City Yard and Recycling Center at 72 Tremont Street.

From 8 – 11:45 a.m. you can drop off certain toxic household items that are not allowed in the trash. Proof of residency is required. Fees for Melrose residents will primarily be determined by actual estimated total volume of hazardous waste not volume of containers themselves according to the following fee list:

1-3 gal. – $20 / 4-10 gal. – $30 / 11-25 gal. – $60

Please bring a check – payable to the City of Melrose. Credit cards are not accepted.

Commercial hazardous waste will not be accepted.

What to bring: oil-based paints, spray paint, stains, thinners, strippers sealers solvents, adhesives, glues, resins, kerosene, swimming pool chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, cleaning products, hobby and artist supplies.

What not to bring: electronics, alkaline batteries, explosives, medical waste, latex paint, propane tanks, smoke detectors, radioactive materials, and materials with no hazardous constituents.

To ensure safety:

• Never mix chemicals

• Never smoke while handling hazardous waste

• Do not place waste in plastic trash bags

• Tighten caps and lids leaving material in original labeled containers

• Sort and pack containers separately, upright

• Pack your vehicle and proceed directly to the City Yard

Since the improper disposal of hazardous waste is dangerous for Department of Public Works employees and harmful to the environment, we encourage you to take advantage of this important event.

Please note that Melrose residents should bring dried latex paint (free), tires ($2-8), TVs and computer screens ($20) and propane tanks (free to $2) to the City Yard at 72 Tremont Street during regular hours of operation rather than to this hazardous waste day.
