SPRINGVALE, Maine — Dr. Robert H. Ciullo, 89, of Springvale, Maine, a loving and truly caring man as well as a proud WWII U.S. Marine, passed away peacefully on Sunday March 11, 2018 at Hunnington Commons in Kennebunk, Maine surrounded by his family. Bob was born on May 14, 1928 to Theresa and Alphonso Ciullo in Arlington, Massachusetts and graduated Arlington High School in 1946.

He earned his private pilot license and served in the Civil Air Patrol, Massachusetts Wing in 1945 then joined the United States Marine Corp from 1945 through 1947. Bob also served in the Army National Guard of Massachusetts, 101st Infantry from 1954 – 1957.

Bob then focused on his long and distinguished teaching career after he graduated from Boston College in 1953. He taught science at Saugus High School from 1956-1958 and then moved to Maine to teach at Nasson College in Springvale for 23 years as a biology professor; 1958-1981. In 1968 he earned his PhD in Zoology from University of New Hampshire. He then finished his teaching career at Quincy College in Quincy, Massachusetts and retired in 1993.

Bob loved to teach students about the environment and he had a passion for water quality. He was appointed by then-Governor Longley and served on the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission and was also publicly elected and served on the Board of Trustees for the Sanford Water District for many years.

Bob is survived by his wife Barbara, son David and his wife Doreen (Palmer) Ciullo of Springvale, Maine, daughter Linda (Gorham) Stackhouse and husband Mark of Wakefield, Massachusetts. In addition, he is predeceased by his daughter Julianne Gorham and son Douglas Ciullo. He is also survived by his four grandchildren Jordan, Michael, Joey and Daniel.

His wishes were to have only a graveside service with full Marine Corp honors and that will be honored on Saturday April 21, at 9:30 a.m. at Notre Dame Cemetery in Springvale, Maine.
