Firefighters worked quickly to knock down the heavy fire in the kitchen area.

A second alarm was struck at 12:41 p.m. for manpower, bringing Stoneham, Reading and Melrose engines and a North Reading ladder truck to the fire. The fire was primarily confined to the first floor kitchen with the remainder of the home suffering heavy smoke and heat damage.

The fire is being investigated Wakefield Fire Department fire investigation team and is suspected to be an accidental malfunction of an appliance inside the kitchen area.

Chief Michael Sullivan praised the first responding firefighters for quickly knocking down the fire.

Firefighters were able to quickly deploy two hose lines into the building, confining the fire to the kitchen and adjacent concealed wall and ceiling spaces. Heavy smoke resulted in zero visibility conditions during the fire, forcing firefighters to break many windows and cut a hole in the roof to vent the building of smoke. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

Four residents of the home will be displaced for an extended period of time until repairs can be made.

Andrea Kelly and her two young sons occupy the main house on the first and second floors. William Hoyt occupied a separate apartment in the basement.

The fire was discovered and reported by Ms. Kelly, who upon returning home from shopping, promptly called 911 to report the fire.

There was no one home at the time of the fire.

Two dogs inside the residence were rescued by Ms. Kelly.

Firefighters were able to rescue two cats from the home after the fire was knocked down. All four pets appear to be uninjured from the fire.

The home is owned by Croce Family Trust out of New Hampshire.

Property damage is estimated to be in excess of $100,000.

A Lynnfield ladder truck and engines from Saugus and Woburn covered the town at Wakefield Fire Headquarters during the fire.
