MELROSE — Harry J. Murphy, 88, of Melrose, USAF Korean War Veteran, died peacefully on January 6, 2018.

Harry was born in Bangor, Maine on August 16, 1929 to James and Catherine (Glennon) Murphy. He was raised in Woburn, and graduated from Woburn High School. Harry enlisted in the United States Air Force and served honorably during the Korean War. After the war, Harry worked and traveled with the Ice Capades before continuing his education at the University of Notre Dame. He then went on to earn a master’s degree from Salem State. Harry was a beloved physical education teacher and coach in the City of Melrose for over thirty years, working at the Coolidge School, Roosevelt School, Junior High School, and the Middle School.

Harry was the beloved husband of 49 years to June L. (Pamp) Murphy of Melrose. Loving father of Timothy J. Murphy of Wakefield and Kristen L. Sawicki and her husband Jared of North Chelmsford. Caring brother of Eunice Usedom of Illinois and the late Rose Janerico. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, January 11, from 4 – 7 p.m., at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose. A funeral service will be held at the Gately Funeral Home on Friday, January 12, at 10 a.m. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
