LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield golf team is headed to states.

The Pioneers matched up against Newburyport at Rowley Country Club last Monday looking for one more win to get to states.

The Clippers were 3-0 going into the match but Lynnfield took care of business in a nail biter, with the score 152-150. Jed Caswell and George DeRoach led the team with 30 points each (+1).

It came down to a tie after the sixth highest score, so both teams had to use their seventh highest score. Matt Stevens came in clutch for Lynnfield with 17 points, beating Newburyport’s third seed who had 15 points.

“Heading into the match against another undefeated team and beating them on the road couldn’t have felt any better,” said Caswell.

Beats Masco

The Pioneers were fortunate enough to have played at the Salem Country Club last Thursday against another talented team in Masconomet. On both sides it was a challenge against the course more so than the other team.

Lynnfield played to their full potential putting up 133 points on the Donald Ross Masterpiece. The top scorers were Aidan Kelley and George DeRoach with 27 points a piece.

“As captain of this team, going into it I knew we had talent and knew if we could put the work in we would qualify for states,” said Caswell. “We aren’t done yet, but I am proud of every one of my teammates with their work ethic thus far.”
