NORTH READING — The baseball players from the Class of 2020 at both Lynnfield and North Reading High Schools will get to hear the cry of “play ball” one more time.

With the support of the North Reading Diamond Club, comprised of Hornet baseball alumni, an exhibition game featuring NRHS seniors and their Lynnfield High School counterparts has been scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1, at North Reading’s Carey Park, 189 Park St. First pitch will take place at 10:30 a.m.

The Diamond Club decided to forego its 44th annual Alumni Game in favor of this special matchup, believing it was important for the seniors, who saw their 2020 season canceled as a result of COVID-19, to play one last time with their classmates and have a positive final memory about their high school baseball experience.

Each senior from both Lynnfield and North Reading will be recognized prior to the game, and all proceeds raised will be donated to the programs’ respective scholarship funds.

With social distancing protocols in place, Carey Park’s size and sight lines should still allow for a good number of fans and alumni from both towns to attend and create a memorable sendoff for the seniors as they end their high school careers and start the next chapter of their lives.

Tickets will be available at the gate at the field entrance. Coach Frank Carey will be collecting donations of $10 per adult and $5 per child, with a $20 family maximum. Gate donations will be split with the Lynnfield baseball program.
