WEST NEWBURY — On a warm, sunny, Monday afternoon, the Lynnfield High boys’ tennis team beat host Pentucket, 5-0, to stay undefeated. With that win, the Pioneers improved to 14-0 overall and 9-0 in the Cape Ann League. The CAL Kinney division champs also claimed their first league title since 2003.

“We wanted to finished undefeated in the league and we were able to do that,” said Pioneers head coach Joe Dunn, as his squad completed the season sweep over the Sachems.

At first singles, Max Rothermund, won, 6-3, 6-1, while Arlex Correa-Ramirez won, 6-2, 6-1. Third singles player, Colin Lamusta, also won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles action, the first team of Mike Gentile and Lorenzo Russo won, 6-2, 6-4, while the second team of David Gentile and Jamil Khodr won, 6-2, 6-0.

Last Friday afternoon, the Pioneers won at Swampscott, 5-0, in a non-league match.

“They have some very good players,” said Dunn, about the Big Blue. “The final scores don’t indicate how close the match actually was.”

Rothermund won, 6-1, 6-2, at first singles while, Correa-Ramirez won, 6-2, 6-3, at second singles. Lamusta won, 6-2, 6-0, at third singles.

Mike Gentile and Russo won, 6-4, 6-1, at first doubles while David Gentile and Khodr won, 6-0, 6-2, at second singles.

On Thursday afternoon, the Pioneers will look to finished the year undefeated (the loss to St. John’s Prep on May 4 was an exclusion match and does not count against the team), as they host Swampscott at 3:30 p.m. at Lynnfield Middle School in the regular-season finale.

It is also Senior Day as the seven Pioneer 12th-graders will be honored before the match.

“It should be a fun day,” said Dunn.
