LYNNFIELD — The Cape Ann League field hockey coaches recently selected their All-Star teams and four Lynnfield High players made the squad. Two Pioneers players made the CAL First-Team All-Stars while two other made the second team.

Senior co-captains, Lily Rothwell and Carolyn Garofoli, both made the first team.

Rothwell, who made the second team her sophomore and junior years, led the team in goals with 18 and the attacker also had five assists to finish with 23 points.

Garofoli, a center-back, was a first team CAL All-Star last fall.

Senior defenseman, Grace MacDonald and junior goalie Ava O’Brien both made the second team.

O’Brien went 16-5 in net this year as she had an .830 save percentage while MacDonald was the other captain.

The Pioneers also had their team banquet and head coach Mamie Reardon gave out three awards that night.

Rothwell and Garofoli shared the team’s MVP Award. O’Brien was the Unsung Hero Award winner while senior Lauren Kuska received the Scholar Athlete Award.

Along with Rothwell, Garofoli, MacDonald and Kuska, the team will lose four other seniors, Gabby Langone (forward), Talia Bridgham (right-midfielder), Jenna Freni (sweeper) and Olivia Ventre (forward).

“The seniors were a great bunch of kids,” said Reardon. “They were very involved and fun to work with.”

It was a memorable season for the Pioneers as they reached the Division 2 state semifinals before getting edged by Dover-Sherborn 2-1 on Nov. 14. Dover-Sherborn then won the state title two days later.

Lynnfield finished at 16-5 overall and 12-4 in the league. They came in second place in the CAL Kinney division behind Masconomet.

“We had only four returning starters coming into the season,” said Reardon, who just completed her 37th-year at the helm. “I thought that this was going to be a rebuilding season but the veterans took control and it became a great season.”

Next year, the Pioneers should be in great shape as they are slated to return 17 veterans including their top scorer, Madison Murphy. Murphy, a forward, had 24 points with 12 goals and a team-high 12 assists.

“We show a lot of promise,” said Reardon.
