PEABODY — Last Friday, the seedings for the Division 3 North state tournament came out and the Lynnfield High girls’ basketball team found out who they would open up with.

The Pioneers, who finished at 13-6 this season, received the fifth seed and they were able to get a first round bye. However, they will have to play their first postseason game on the road as they will travel to Peabody to take on Bishop Fenwick on Friday night (Feb. 28) at 7 p.m.

The Crusaders, a team out of the Catholic Central League, enter the game at 14-6 as they are the 4th seed.

“I have scouted them, but they were missing their center who was injured, and I am not sure if she is going to be back for this game,” said Pioneers head coach Peter Bocchino. “I think we match up well with them. We have more experienced guards and are bigger than they are.”

Bocchino also went on to say that the Crusaders like to push the ball up the court and make it a faster-paced type of game.

There will be a huge gap in between games for the Pioneers as their final game of the regular season came back on Feb. 13 meaning they will not have played in 15 days.

“We had scrimmages against Burlington and Saugus and have also played the (Lynnfield) freshman boys’ team,” pointed out Bocchino, as he has tried to keep his squad sharp.

Victoria Morelli leads the Pioneers in scoring this year averaging 11 points per contest. The senior captain is also second in rebounds averaging nine per game.

Sophomore Cate MacDonald is the team’s leader in rebounds averaging 12 per game while Grace Klonsky leads the team in steals per game with four and deflections with seven.

Klonsky, a junior point guard, also averages seven points and five rebounds per game.
