LYNNFIELD — On Monday evening, the Lynnfield Senior Babe Ruth baseball team beat the visiting Arlington Pond Rats, 7-5, at Lynnfield High School. With that win, they improved to 4-3.

“We were leading, 7-1, but they chipped away,” explained Lynnfield first-year manager Al Fiore. “We were missing some of our key players who are on vacation.”

Brian Cardarelli was the winning pitcher in this game as he went 4 2/3 innings allowing four runs.

Lynnfield’s offense did all of its damage in the first two innings as they scored three times in the bottom of the first inning and four runs in the second.

Cardarelli helped his own cause at bat going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Clayton Marengi also went 2-for-4 at the dish.

It was a nice bounce-back win for the team after falling 12-2 to the host Malden Bambinos at Malden Catholic High School.

“They are in first place for a reason,” pointed out Fiore. “They have a very strong team.”

On Wednesday night at 6, they return to Malden Catholic to take on the Malden Marlins. Thursday night at 7:30, they take on host Cambridge at St. Peter’s Field.

This Sunday afternoon at 5, Lynnfield goes to Spy Pond Field to take on the Arlington Cardinals.

Lynnfield then host Woburn next Monday afternoon at 5:45 and visits Wakefield next Tuesday also at 5:45, at Walsh Field.

“We have a lot of games to play since we had to start our season a little later because of the high school season running long,” explained Fiore.

With the win over Arlington on Monday, the team moved up to ninth place in the 13-team league.

The regular season ends on July 31st and the playoffs begin right afterward.
