BOSTON — The boys’ and girls’ LHS track and field teams competed in the Cape Ann League Championships last Tuesday against the best the league has to offer. Lynnfield had some excellent individual efforts from both teams to headline a CAL meet to remember.

Mitchell’s 1000 meter run highlights girls’ team

Lynnfield senior Kate Mitchell entered the 2018 CAL Championships with plenty of accolades to bring with her to the Boston College Track and Field team next year, but creating a new school record was at the forefront of her mind, even if it was her own time to beat. Mitchell owned the 1,000 school record with a time of 2:59.01 she got last year. She crushed that time at CAL’s by almost four full seconds, finishing at 2:55.20, 14 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

Mitchell’s performance was also good enough to qualify as a Milesplit US first team or gold standard performance, one of only two such performances at CAL’s this year.

The Pioneers also got a good race from sophomore Emma Ricciardi who finished four spots below Mitchell for 5th in the 1,000 with a time of 3:22.03.

Senior Juliana Passatempo took 11th in the 300 meter with a time of 46.39, followed closely by sophomore Danielle Percoskie (47.61).

Junior Gabriella Passatempo got 13th in the two mile, crossing the line in 13:27.57.

The Mitchell family stole the show again in the 600 meters as Kate’s sisters, freshmen Ashley (1:43.06) and Lauren Mitchell (1:45.70) both ran good races, finishing 5th and 8th respectively.

Senior Aja Parker made some noise in the long jump, as she finished 8th with a “15’02.25 jump.

Freshman April Luders finished 11th in the long jump at “14’04.00.

The 4×400 meter relay was the best relay team of the day for the Pioneers, as they took 2nd in 4:19.38.

Kinnon gets gold in 55 dash, silver in long jump

Senior Nick Kinnon lived up to his reputation as one of the league’s best all-around track and field competitors at CAL’s. Kinnon took first in the 55 meter dash (6.65), and second in the long jump (“20’03.50).

Junior Brett Cohee also had a strong meet, taking 3rd in the 300 meters at 37.74 and 9th in the long jump at “17’10.

Junior Jack Campbell (1:30.56) took 6th in the 600 meters while sophomore Alejandro Lynch nabbed 9th (1:32.58).

Kinnon and Cohee weren’t the only highlights in the long jump as sophomore Tommy Hauser’s 4th-place finish (“19’04.75) helped the Pioneers take three of the top-10 finishes.

The 4×200 was the most impressive relay team for the boys, as they took 2nd with a time of 1:37.78.

Senior Nathan Drislane provided LHS with one last memory as he took 4th in the shot put with a throw of “43’5.

Overall it was an excellent performance for both teams as they prepare for the MIAA DIv. 5 Championships on Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Center.
