Enjoyed cooking, sewing and baking

MELROSE — Mary T. (Keane) O’Brien, 91, of Melrose and Saugus, passed away at home on Sept. 27, 2019.

Mary was born and raised in Newton and was a graduate of Newton High School. She resided in Medford for 21 years and the past 45 years in Melrose. Mary worked as a dietitian for the Malden Hospital and Forest Dale Nursing Home, both in Malden, and Oosterman’s Rest Home and the Normandy House, both in Melrose for many years. She also worked for the Malden Census and the Children’s Exchange in Melrose. Mary was a longtime member of the Church of the Incarnation in Melrose and enjoyed cooking, sewing, and baking.

She was caring and devoted to her family and friends and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the most important part of her life. Mary was the beloved wife of the late Robert P. O’Brien for 61 years. She was the loving mother of Robert A. O’Brien and his wife Corinne of Wilmington; James P. O’Brien and his wife Janet of Lynnfield; Maureen T. Riley and her husband Edward of Saugus; Patricia E. Hughes and her husband Daniel of Melrose; Timothy M. O’Brien and his longtime companion Christine Cohane of Melrose; and the late William J. O’Brien and his wife Julie of Ipswich. She was the cherished grandmother of Amy, Keith, Mark, Kristin, Robby, Talene, Gabrielle, Douglas, Patrick, Julianne, William and Jaclyn and the late Katelyn. She was the caring sister of the late Irene Kiley, Robert Keane and Carolyn Hart. She was the sister-in-law of Dorothy O’Brien of Tewksbury and Carol Keane of Natick. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 4-8 p.m. Procession from the Gately Funeral Home will take place on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Church of the Incarnation 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited.
