WAKEFIELD — Mary E. Smallwood, 89, of Wakefield, died Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Born in Boston on April 17, 1929 she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Crowley) Fitzpatrick.

Mary was raised in Charlestown and was a graduate of Charlestown High School. Following graduation, she went on to Ms. Chandlers Secretarial School and then enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served her country for three years. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing the Colonial and Hillview courses. Mary was also a member of the Reading YMCA, the Wakefield Bowladrome Tuesday and Friday leagues, and St. Joseph Church.

She was the beloved wife of the late Donald H. Smallwood. She was the loving mother of Michael Smallwood and his wife Deborah of Wakefield and Kathleen Tierney and her husband John of Reading. She was the sister of the late John and William Fitzpatrick, Eleanor Ahern, and Ruth Malcolmson. She was the dear sister-in-law of Margaret Fitzpatrick of Stoneham and the cherished grandmother of Patrick and his wife Tia, Jillian and her husband Max, Daniel, Devin, Ashton and her husband Jared, Ryan, Colin, and Fallon. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Troy, Cecelia, Max, and Quinn; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Monday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Interment, Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
