WAKEFIELD — Matthew Lafferty, 84, of Wakefield formerly of Melrose, died Sunday, November 11, 2018 at his residence.

Born in Gourock, Scotland on September 16, 1934 he was the son of the late Daniel and Briget (Coyle) Laverty.

Matthew was raised and educated in Gourock, Scotland before moving to the United States in 1955, where he settled in Melrose. He moved to Wakefield in 1980. He was the former Chief Building Inspector for the City of Boston from which he retired in 2002. Prior to being the building inspector, he was a self-employed mason. Matthew enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and spending time at his cabin in Washington, N.H.

He was the beloved husband of Eleanor K. (Maloof) Lafferty. He was the loving father of Steven and his wife Ellen of Peabody, Andrew and his wife Katherine of Georgetown, and Kenneth and his wife Tracey of Reading. He was the brother of Michael Laverty of Scotland, Pat Gallagher of Scotland, and the late John Laverty of Scotland, Bridget Carroll of Scotland, Theresa Law of England, Daniel Laverty of Melrose, Rose Whitelaw of Scotland, Rita O’Brien of Melrose, James Laverty of Ireland, and Christopher Laverty of Scotland. Also survived by seven grandchildren: Steven Jr., Cali, Kiera, Ryan, Nora, Thomas, and Michael; as well as many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Thursday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 a.m. Interment, Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield. Visitation for relatives and friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m.
