MELROSE — On Monday night, the Melrose Americans were doubled up by visiting Medford, 14-7, at Morelli Field in Intercity League action. With the defeat, the Americans record fell to 6-17 while Malden improved to 9-12-2.

Melrose led 7-6 heading into the fourth inning but the Maddogs scored twice in the fourth, once in the fifth, four times in the sixth and one more in the seventh to pull away.

Dave Center led Melrose at bat going 2 for 3 with three runs batted in. Elias Varinos, meanwhile, was 2 for 4 with one RBI. Nick Rath added an RBI double while Matt Hosman and Ian Libby each knocked in one run.

Melrose starter Shawn Smeglin fell to 0-6 on the mound. He lasted four innings allowing nine runs and nine hits.

On Sunday evening, the Americans were swept by guest Somerville in a doubleheader. The Royals win the first game 12-1 and the second game, 4-1.

Josh Bohn had an RBI single in the fifth inning to account for the lone Melrose run in the first game. In game two, Hosman had an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Last Friday night, the American beat host Malden 10-8 at Maplewood Field.

Melrose pounded out 10 hits led by Charlie Huegi who went a perfect 4 for 4 with two RBI’s and four runs scored. He also stole two bases.

Varinos also had a big night as he was 3 for 5 with one run scored.

Dennis Crowley knocked in two runs while Bohn, and Nick Cordeau had one RBI each.

The winning pitcher was Jason Giangrande in relief as he went the final four innings. He gave up one run, five hits no walks and he fanned five to go to 1-0.

This Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., the American will visit Wakefield at Walsh Field. They then host Malden next Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

On Aug. 7, the Americans host Alibrandis at 7:30 p.m.

The final game of the regular season is on Aug. 8 as they host the Andre Chiefs with that game also starting at 7:30 p.m.
