MELROSE — Donations to the Melrose Emergency Fund topped $55,000 this week, setting a new record for the holiday donation drive.

Those donations included one from Sadie Smith, who asked the guests at her birthday party to bring donations to the Emergency Fund instead of presents.

“I am incredibly touched by this unselfish gesture,” said Mayor Robert J. Dolan “This year, as in previous years, we have seen an incredible outpouring of generosity on the part of our fellow Melrosians. Thanks to all of you, we will be able to continue to extend a helping hand to our neighbors, and we will continue to work hard to ensure that no one ever goes cold or hungry in Melrose.”

While the holiday fund-raising drive is over, the Emergency Fund accepts donations year-round. To make a donation, send a check to Melrose Emergency Fund, Mayor’s Office, 562 Main St., Melrose, MA 02176 or bring it directly to the Mayor’s Office on the second floor of City Hall.
