MELROSE — Donations to the Melrose Emergency Fund topped $38,000 this week with the help of two grass-roots fundraisers: A golf tournament organized by Evan Georgopoulos, owner of The Barber’s Den, and two fundraisers held by Anna Burtnett and her friends Lexie Beacom and Morgan Veit: “Yoga for a Cause” event at Joy Yoga and a 50-50 raffle.

“One of my favorite things about the Emergency Fund is that it is a true expression of the spirit of our community,” said Mayor Rob Dolan. “Evan, Anna, Lexie, and Morgan took the initiative to raise money for the fund, giving up their free time to help their neighbors. Every day, people come to my office to drop off their donations in person. I know each donation could have gone for something else—a bill, a gift, or dinner out—and I appreciate the fact that everyone in Melrose is willing to make that sacrifice to help a stranger in need. That is truly the spirit of the holidays—and of Melrose.”
