MELROSE—Every baseball season, Melrose Little League (MLL) awards scholarships annually to a graduating high school senior and MLL Alumni. In 2020, MLL will be awarding three scholarships to three deserving Melrose High School seniors who will be continuing their education at the collegiate level next fall.

Melrose Little League seeks to implant firmly in the children of Melrose the ideals of good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage, teamwork and respect for authority through wholesome and effective leadership in the disciplines of baseball so that they may be well adjusted, stronger, happier children and will grow to be good, decent, healthy and trustworthy citizens.

In an effort to recognize those children who have been members of Melrose Little League and who have continued to demonstrate a commitment to our Melrose community, while advancing their education and the ideals of our League, a onetime scholarship in the amount was awarded to eligible and deserving student scholarship applicants.

Each student applicant must compose an essay no less than one page describing his or her Little League experience and any lasting, positive influence(s) received including, but not limited to those that may continue to have a positive impact upon the applicant. The essays are submitted to MLL and reviewed by a select committee of the Board of Directors, who determines the winners.

This year’s winners are Katie Tarpey, Liam McCall and Cole Lepler.

Katie will be attending Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut this fall and will be part of their 3+1 Communications program, which allows her to receive a master’s degree in 4 years! Katie is interested in many of the communications fields, especially sports broadcasting. She hopes to play basketball and softball at Quinnipiac, the two sports she played at Austin Prep, winning the State Championship in Softball.

Liam will be attending St. John’s University in New York City this fall to study marketing in the honors program at Tobin Business School. He is looking forward to experiencing the great opportunities attending school in New York City and at St. John’s University. Liam plans to play club and intramural sports and enjoy sporting events like the Big East Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden.

Cole will attend Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia in the fall. Cole will major in Political Science, play intercollegiate baseball for the university and play the trombone for the university band.

On behalf of MLL, we wish nothing but the best of fortune and success to these three outstanding and deserving 2020 scholarship winners.
