MELROSE — Gail M. Infurna will be sworn in as interim mayor during a ceremony Monday morning in the Aldermanic Chamber.

Infurna takes the oath of office at 11 a.m. She will serve out the remaining 23 months of Rob Dolan’s four year term. Dolan starts his new job as Lynnfield’s top full-time municipal professional on Monday.

Dolan’s pending departure led to a scramble among four aldermen as they vied to become the next board president. In that position, the person would also serve as mayor of Melrose as stipulated in the City Charter, since Dolan left with less than two years remaining in his term.

Infurna got the most votes from her colleagues during the annual — and normally routine — meeting to select the aldermanic president Jan. 8.

Dolan served as Melrose’s chief elected officer for the past 16 years.

Monday, a new chapter in the city’s history will start to be written.
