MELROSE — Anthony M. “Tony” Scalisi, 84, of Melrose, peacefully passed away at the Oosterman’s Rest Home in Melrose on Feb. 3, 2019. 

Tony was born and raised in Medford, a graduate of Medford High School, Class of 1953. He was inducted into the Medford High School Sports Hall of Fame for Baseball and Hockey. Tony proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958.

Mr. Scalisi resided in Melrose for over 50 years, enjoyed his daily walks around Melrose to visit old friends and make new ones and was an active member of St. Mary’s Church in Melrose. He worked in the warehouse for Linden Meyer Paper Company in Boston for many years and also as a custodian for the Melrose Middle School for over 10 years. Tony was a member of the V.F.W. Harold O. Young post # 2394 in Melrose for many years. He coached Melrose Youth Hockey from 1973-1982, where they took annual trips to Drummondville, Canada, Lake Placid, N.Y. and were the 1977 State Midget Champions.

Tony also coached Babe Ruth baseball in Melrose, enjoyed playing Rummey with his brother Bob and grandkids, going to Long Sands Beach in York, Maine and spending time at the family home on Sebago Lake in Maine for over 25 years. Tony loved taking annual trips to spend time with his brothers Bob and Jack to Ft. Myers, Fla. and Myrtle Beach, S.C. with his friends.

Tony’s family was the most important part of his life. He was the loving father of Mark S. Scalisi, Karen A. Scalisi, both of Melrose, Cheryl L. Scalisi and her fiancé Greg Celko of Webster, Walter P. Scalisi of Melrose and Brian M. Scalisi and his wife Tina of Saugus. Cherished grandfather of Sophia, Juliana, Christina and Dara. Longtime companion of Margaret Ambrogne of Melrose. Former spouse of the late Frances Y. (McCabe) Scalisi. Caring brother of the late Robert Scalisi and his wife Jean of Medford and the late Jack Scalisi and his wife Joanne of Fla. Also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Sunday, Feb. 10 from 1-4 p.m. Procession from the Gately Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 11 at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 9 Herbert St., Melrose at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
