Custodian at MHS for many years

MALDEN — Donald Smith, 83, of Malden, died at the Saugus Center in Saugus on December 28, 2017.

Donald was born and raised in Melrose and attended Melrose schools. After high school, he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Donald worked as a custodian for the City of Melrose at the Melrose High School for many years until his retirement at the age of 65. He also worked as a crossing guard at the Salemwood School in Malden for several years. Mr. Smith resided in Melrose until 1967 and the past 50 years in Malden.

Donald enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching TV and his family was the most important part of his life. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Wells) Smith for over 50 years. Loving father of Christopher M. Smith of Malden. Caring brother of Anna McClure and her late husband Thomas of Fla., and the late William “Buddy” Smith and his late wife Claire. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours were held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, January 4, followed by a funeral service. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend.
