MELROSE — Dr. Edward R. Boyd, 88, of Melrose, died at the Aberjona Nursing Center in Winchester on August 15, 2019.

Dr. Boyd was born and raised in Everett and a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1948. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt aircraft carrier from 1948-1952. Ed went on to Boston University and earned his associates in Arts degree in 1953, bachelors in Education in 1957, masters in Education in 1969 and a doctorate in Education in 1973.

He resided in Melrose since 1963 and was a member of Bellevue Golf Club in Melrose for over 25 years. Dr. Boyd worked as the Executive Director for the Gifford School in Weston from 1976-1987, Staff Psychologist from 1989-1992, Clinical Director from 1992-1995 and Senior Clinical Consultant from 1995-2001 at the North Essex Mental Health Center in Newburyport.

Mr. Boyd served as an Adjunct Professor teaching Group Psychotherapy at Lesley University from 2001-2003. Dr. Boyd was a retired member of the American Psychological Association, The Mass. Psychological Association and the American Orthopsychiatry Association. He was a former Assistant Principal for the Manville School at the Judge Baker Guidance Center in Boston, on the board of the Harbor Schools in Newburyport, Director of the Dearborn School in Cambridge and ran Camp Wideko in Hillsborough, N.H. Ed was an editor and writer for the Melrose Mirror, enjoyed playing golf for over 30 years and his last round of golf was with his friends called the “Riley’s Raiders.”

Dr. Boyd was the beloved husband of the late Catherine P. (Harrington) Boyd for over 60 years. Loving father of Ellen McIntosh and her husband Jeff of N.H., Elizabeth Boyd Garrett of Wash., Maura Feener of Gloucester, Michael Boyd and Karen of Stoneham, Peter Boyd and his wife Cathryn of Methuen, Amy Conley of N.H. and Martha Wightman and her husband Bill of Melrose. Caring brother of the late Charles T. Boyd and his wife Glenice of Bradford. Cherished grandfather of Danielle, Courtney, Joseph, Daniel, Sarah, Emily, Molly, Megan and Jillian. Great-grandfather of Carter, Grant and Michael. Also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours were held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Tuesday, August 20. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private.
