MELROSE — Marie Bernadette “Bernie” Williams, 90, passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on February 26, 2019.

Bernie was born in Malden on August 7, 1928 to the late John and Grace (McDermott) Lucey. She was raised in Wakefield and graduated from Wakefield High School. Mrs. Williams married her husband John in 1950 and moved to Melrose. They started raising their family of eight in the Hesseltine section of Melrose and have been residents ever since.

Bernie was a longtime member of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield; she was a member of the Ladies Guild, the CFM and was very involved with the church for the past 68 years. Mrs. Williams started out working at Converse Rubber Plant in Melrose prior to marriage and then concentrated on raising her eight children. She enjoyed playing cards and cribbage but most of all she cherished spending time with her large extended family.

Bernie was the beloved wife of 68 years to John M. Williams Sr. Loving mother of Grace M. Williams and Patricia Tarbox of Belmont, John M. Williams Jr. and wife Karen of Lynnfield, Maureen E. Pyatt and husband Larry of Melrose, Michael J. Williams and wife Valerie Vining of Medford, Mary Ann Williams and wife Marcia Orlowski of Melrose, Joseph P. Williams and wife Rose of Saugus, Thomas P. Williams and wife Denise of Wakefield and James F. Williams and wife Nancy of Melrose.

Cherished grandmother of Michael, Nicole, Brian, Ashley, Jacqueline, James, Alex, Matthew, Ashton, Christopher, Ryan, Sean and Brady as well as eight great-grandchildren. Caring sister of Patricia Foley, Sister Marie Dennis S.P., Margaret Lucey and the late Jack Lucey, Francis Lucey, Grace Jones and Dorothy Dillon. Sister-in-law of the late Charles and Catherine Williams, Henry and Anne Williams, Albert and Helen Williams, Thomas and Margaret Flanagan, Andrew and Mary Williams, Agnes Williams, Anna Lucey, Margaret Lucey, Edward Jones, Herbert Dillon and Al Foley. Also survived by numerous, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Friday, March 1from 4-8 p.m. Funeral procession from the Gately Funeral Home, on Saturday morning March 2 at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 10 a.m. Burial at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
