PROVIDENCE, RI—The Melrose High wrestling team sent two of its state champions to compete in the New England High School Championships held last weekend in Providence. Both athletes qualified after their dominating All State performances.

Sophomores Sean Herbert and Hunter Adrian competed with the best in the region over Friday and Saturday representing the 138 and 106 weight classes, respectively.

Hunter Adrian was crowned the New England Champion in the 106 in a double overtime 2-1 win over Joziah Fry of Coventry, RI. Adrian began his bracket with wins over competitors from Pentucket and Rhode Island before facing Fry, whom Hunter had beaten this season. According to Melrose coach James Bleiler, officiating became the key component in the match. Both were called for stalling and awarded points, but Adrian received the deciding one-point in second overtime (in a 30/30).

“This opponent was tough, he had Hunter by the arms but then he wouldn’t let go of his ankle. But Hunter is a smart and focused wrestler who outlasted him. To win New England’s is huge and we are happy for him.”

Herbert wrestled in the 138 and, after taking a loss, had an affirming win over rival Sean Morton of Reading. “Sean beat his 6-0 which was a good win for him,” says his coach.

Both wrestlers will be competing in the US Nationals in Virginia in late March.
