NORTH READING — Led by long time assistant and now first year head coach Ryan Spinney, the North Reading boys’ indoor track program looks to improve on it’s .500 record from last year.

“This year’s squad has a lot of potential for success as we are fielding a team of roughly 50 athletes and many of them are returning contributors from last season,” said coach Spinney. “Workouts have been positive and the morale seems to be very good as we gear up for our first meet on December 8.”

Captains for the team are seniors James Garniss, Zach Rinaldi, Joseph McCarthy and junior Cameron Chinchillo.

“We have strong leaders this winter,” stated Spinney. “These captains are both the winter and spring team leaders so it is a good opportunity for them to really connect with their teammates and develop their abilities over two seasons.”

The senior class will be leading the Hornet attack this winter as James Garniss (Shot Put), Joey DiSanto (55 meter dash, Shot Put), Joey McCarthy (300 meter Dash, 4 x 400 relay), Zach Rinaldi (600 meter run, 4 x 400 relay), Karlis Plavins (1000 meter run, 1 mile run), David Tingley (300 meter run, 4 x 400 meter relay) and Ahmed Benhafoune (1000 meter run, 1 mile run) will all be looking to contribute key points each meet.

“This is a strong and talented group,” stated Spinney. “They know what is expected of them in order for our team to be successful and they are all up for the task.”

The junior class is led by All-State finalist Billy Lord (55 meter Hurdles) who is looking to duplicate that feat this year. He also is a strong long jumper and member of the relay for the Hornets.

“Billy is a true talent who knows what he is capable of when he puts in the hard work required,” said Spinney.

Other contributing juniors include Cam Chinchillo (55 meter hurdles, high jump, long jump), Andrew DeBenedetto (1000 meter run, 1 mile run) Joey Frammartino (55 meter dash, 300 meter dash), Chris Gwozdz (shot put), Nick McGovern (shot put), Ian Miller (high jump), Chris Nearing (1 mile run, 2 mile run), Evan Raffael (300 meter dash) and Brendan Witts (55 meter dash, 300 meter dash).

Other members of the Hornets squad who are looking to contribute are sophomores Grayson Budny (55 meter dash, high jump, long jump), Garrett Butler (55 meter hurdles, high jump, long jump), Ryan Good (300 meter dash, 600 meter run), Sam McGeachie (1000 meter run), Griffin Murphy (300 meter dash, 600 meter run), Jack Murphy (1000 meter run, high jump, 4 x 400 meter relay), Will O’Leary (300 meter dash), Kyle Rabbitt (600 meter run), Nick Rinaldi (1000 meter run) and freshman Anthony Petersino (1 mile run, 2 mile run) and Aidan Nadeau (600 meter run, 1000 meter run).

The Hornets will kick off their season against Triton and Pentucket at Reggie Lewis on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 12 p.m.
