NORTH READING — The North Reading High volleyball team blanked visiting Winthrop, 3-0, in a non-league match on Tuesday afternoon. With that win, the Hornets improved to 8-5 overall and need just two more wins in their final seven matches in order to qualify for the Division 2 state tournament.

The Hornets won the first game, 25-14, and game two, 25-19. They then won 25-20 in the final game.

“We served the ball well and did a good job of hitting out of the middle,” said North Reading head coach Mike Milone.

Lauren Gulbicki had six kills and seven blocks against the Vikings, while Noel Riley had a team-high 15 service points including six aces.

Retire Royals

On Oct. 4, the Hornets defeated guest Georgetown, 3-0, to go to 5-5 in the Cape Ann League.

“Georgetown is still a fairly new team,” explained Milone. “We came out slow, but started serving the ball better as the match went on.”

North Reading won, 25-18, 25-10, and 25-12.

Taylor Moore had seven kills while Abby D’Orlando had 11 assists and six service aces. Jenna Forcellese had 13 digs and 12 service points against the Royals.

This Friday afternoon, the Hornets host third-place Masconomet. They then visit first-place Hamilton-Wenham next Monday afternoon.

Both of those matches will start at 5:30 p.m.
