BOXFORD — The Masconomet Chieftains avenged an early season defeat to the NRHS boys’ soccer team with a tight 2-1 victory on October 8. Sophomore Kiernan Schulz scored for North Reading.

Masco generated a lot of pressure in the first half, but the NRHS defense kept any chances to long range shots which were swallowed up by senior captain Will Carpenter.  The Hornets best chance of the half came from junior defender Gilly Silva who ripped a shot from 40 yards out that was destined for the “upper 90” until the Chieftains keeper made a tremendous save.

The second half started scoreless but Masco scored two goals in a five minute span from the 58th to the 63rd minute to quickly jump ahead.  After a timeout with 10 minutes remaining, North Reading started to put pressure on the Chieftains.

Finally in the 76th minute, senior captain Cam Chinchillo got loose on the left wing and hit a terrific cross that was headed into the net by Schulz. The Hornets had a few chances to tie in the final four minutes but Masco held on.

Shutout Pioneers 3-0

The Hornets returned to the win column and snapped their season long three game losing skid with a big 3-0 victory over the Lynnfield Pioneers on Thursday. Freshman Josh Stanieich scored two goals and Cam Chinchillo added one goal and one assist.

“This was the kind of effort that we were looking for,” said head coach Mark Bisognano. “All of that work in training showed up today and we will continue to work hard to try to build on this performance.”

North Reading took control early on and in the 13th minute they got the scoring started.

On the play, junior Sam McGeachie stole a clearance attempt and sent a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area to Stanieich who headed home his fifth goal of the season.

The half ended 1-0 but not without some controversy. Stanieich appeared to notch his second goal of the game but the ball rebounded out of the goal quickly. The referee didn’t see it that way though and the game continued.

The second half continued much like the first and in the 55th minute, NRHS padded the lead. Junior Nick Pasquale, in his first game back from injury, found Chinchillo in the middle of the box where he put a half volley on goal. The initial shot was saved but Chinchillo headed the rebound past the Pioneers keeper.

The Hornets continued their domination and in the final minute Stanieich finished off the game in style when he tapped a great pass from Chinchillo inside the far post.
