NORTH READING — Two members of the North Reading High field hockey team were recently named Cape Ann League Second Team All-Stars this fall.

The two Hornets to make the squad are sophomores Rees Lord and Ava Czarnota. Lord is a midfielder while Czarnota is a forward.  It is the second year on the varsity team for both players.

Second-year head coach Andrea Slaven was proud of both of them and knows that she will have these two players as cornerstones for the next two seasons.

The team will lose nine seniors to graduation: Leah Ferrazzani, Jessica Ferrazzani, Hailey Sanphy, Jackie Cadena, Abby Carroll, Abby Delano, Maddie Miele,  Erica Burgholzer and  Codi Eicher. Burgholzer and Eicher were the two captains.

“I am grateful for these nine seniors and the impact they have made on the field hockey program at North Reading,” said Slaven. “They taught us to overcome simple challenges, work hard and stay true to our commitments.  They have left their mark and I am fortunate to have crossed paths with them.”

North Reading finished 4-14 overall last season. This season, the Hornets did a little better, as they went 4-11-3 overall and 4-11-2 in the Cape Ann League.

“This season brought its challenges with injuries and close losses, but I think the girls can agree with me that over the span of the three-month season and throughout our 18 games, we became a closer grow and grew as individuals along the way,” said Slaven.  “I am so proud of the adversity they have dealt with whether it was recovering from injuries, stepping up to play new positions, or overcoming the extremely hot, rainy or freezing temperatures we have faced this season.”
