NORTH READING — On a sunny, mild day on Tuesday afternoon, the North Reading High field hockey team was shutout 2-0 by visiting Lynnfield. The Pioneers were able to complete the season sweep with the win.

The Hornets fell to 6-6-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the Cape Ann League with the defeat. They now need at least five points in their final five games in order to qualify for the Division 2 state tournament.

“It was our first game in a week and we came out flat,” said Hornet head coach Andrea Slaven. “They scored early and got the momentum.”

Lynnfield scored off a corner 3:02 into the game. They then got the other goal with 3:52 left in the first half.

In the second half, the Hornets played better.

“We played much better in that half but just couldn’t score,” said Slaven.

Hornets goalie Emma Borland made 12 saves as she played one of her best games of the season according to Slaven.

The Hornets will have back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday and they are both on the road. The Hornets will go to Rockport on Thursday and Masconomet on Friday. Both games will start at 3:45 p.m.

The Masco game is a makeup from Oct. 10 that was postponed. North Reading tied the Chieftains in the first meeting.

On Oct. 21, the Hornets visit Malden in a non-league game looking for the season sweep over the Golden Tornadoes. They then return to league play next Tuesday as they go to Newburyport.

The Malden game will start at 3:45 p.m. while the Newburyport contest will begin at 6 p.m.
