NORTH READING — Last Friday afternoon, the North Reading High field hockey team tied host Lynnfield, 4-4. With that result, the Hornets’ record went to 1-1-1.

“It was a positive statement game,” said Hornets head coach Andrea Slaven, as Lynnfield reached the Division 2 state semifinals last year with several players retuning this fall. “It shows that we can play with the best teams in the league.”

After a scoreless first quarter (the games are in four quarters this year instead of two halves), the Hornets struck first as senior co-captain Ava Czarnota scored.

The Pioneers tied it up later in the second to send the game into halftime knotted up at one.

Lynnfield took its first lead early in the third quarter but senior co-captain Morgan Majeski tied the game up later on in the third.

The Pioneers then took the lead again later in the third but back-to-back goals by Kiersten Fortin and freshman Keely Hannon in the fourth quarter gave the Hornets the lead again.

For both girls it was their first-career goals.

Lynnfield was then able to score later on in the fourth to salvage the tie.

Hornet goalie Emma Borland made nine saves to go to 1-1-1 in net.

The game on Oct. 13 at home against Rockport was rained out and will be made up on Thursday at 5 p.m. The Hornets will then have their Senior Night on Friday at 5:30 p.m. as they welcome Amesbury.

Before the game, the eight North Reading seniors will be honored.

The game on Columbus Day morning against Pentucket at the Amesbury Sports Park was also postponed. The make-up date was unknown as of press time.

On Oct. 20, the Hornets visit Hamilton-Wenham at 4 p.m.
