READING — Katherine E. (Kelly) “Katty” Ryan, 83, of Reading, formerly a longtime resident of Malden, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2018 at Care One in Wilmington.

Katherine was born on April 27, 1935 in Malden, one of four children of the late Timothy Kelly and Lena (Radley) Kelly. Raised and educated in Malden, Katherine was married to the late Edward F. Ryan and they settled in Malden to raise a family of four children. With great strength and determination, Katty provided for her family as an operator for over 30 years at New England Telephone Co.

Katty centered her life around her family. She was a self-reliant yet loving mother, found great joy in hosting family holidays, and was a proud Nana to five grandchildren. With her grandchildren on her mind, Katty prepared 12 months a year for Christmas, and had presents wrapped and ready for Christmas 2018. She was a truly warm and loving matriarch, and doted on her grandchildren with lots of love and generous gifts.

In addition to family, Katty was a longtime parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church in Malden. She held her Irish heritage dear to her heart, loved Irish music, and enjoyed Celtic Women concerts with her family. She also enjoyed rooting for the Patriots, shopping, and going to the theatre in Boston. In retirement, she found more time to enjoy Cape Cod where she could spend time with her dearest friend June and her family. Most of all, Katty will be remembered for the strength she instilled in her family, and for her generous and loving spirit.

Katherine was the devoted mother of Michael P. Ryan of North Reading, Patricia A. Sasso and her husband Eddie Polcaro of Wilmington, Kelly A. Borseti and her husband Ted of Andover, and Tracy A. Harvey and her husband Jim of Billerica. She was the dear sister of Elaine Goggin and her late husband Jimmy, the late Mary Mitz and her surviving husband Wally, and the late Michael J. Kelly. She was the cherished grandmother of Kristen Sasso, Jessica Mineari and her husband Alex, Elizabeth Borseti, Frank Borseti and Kiera Harvey.

Relatives and friends were invited to gather for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Saturday, July 28, followed by her funeral Mass celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden. Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Gifts in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
