NORTH READING — The North Reading Northeast League (ages 15-18) baseball team won their third game in a row on Monday night as they hammered visiting Billerica 13-3 at North Reading High in a five-inning mercy-rule game.

With that victory, North Reading improved to 5-2 as they are in first place in the South division.

“We hit the ball very well that night,” said North Reading manager Marco Vittozzi.

The team had 12 hits in the game although it only went five innings.

Jim Currier, who was also the winning pitcher, led the way at bat going 3 for 4 with one run batted in. Mario Perrone was a perfect 2 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored while Frank Cassarino was 2 for 3 with two RBI’s.

Currier improved to 2-0 on the hill going all five frames. He gave up three runs, four hits, five walks and he fanned ten Billerica batters.

In a nip-and-tuck game on July 2, the A’s edged host Wilmington 2-1. With the scored tied at one in the top of the seventh, Chris Gwozdz had the game-winning RBI with a two-out single.

North Reading’s other run came on an error in the top of the sixth as they won despite having only three hits.

Demitri Boulas was the winning pitcher in relief for the final three innings to go to 1-0. He did not allow any runs or hits. He also did not allow a walk and struck out four.

“He did an excellent job,” stated Vittozzi. “There were two runners on base when he came into the game and was able to get out of that.”

The next game for the team is Thursday (July 11) as they host Lowell Catholic at 6 p.m. On July 16, they go to Billerica and then they visit Dracut the next night.

Both of those games will start at 6 p.m. as well.
