NORTH READING — Taking to heart the words of the legendary Yogi Berra — “It ain’t over ’till it’s over” — the baseball players in North Reading High School’s Class of 2020 will get to hear the cry of “Play Ball” one more time.

With the support of the North Reading Diamond Club, comprised of Hornet baseball alumni, an exhibition game featuring NRHS seniors and their Lynnfield High School counterparts has been scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1, at North Reading’s Carey Park. First pitch will take place at 10:30 a.m.

The Diamond Club decided to forego its 44th annual Alumni Game in favor of this special matchup, believing it was important for the seniors, who saw their 2020 season canceled as a result of COVID-19, to play one last time with their classmates and have a positive final memory about their high school baseball experience.

Each senior from both North Reading and Lynnfield will be recognized prior to the game, and all proceeds raised will be donated to the programs’ respective scholarship funds.

With social distancing protocols in place, Carey Park’s size and sight lines should still allow for a good number of fans and alumni from both towns to attend and create a memorable sendoff for the seniors as they end their high school careers and start the next chapter of their lives.
