WESTFIELD—For the third consecutive year the duo of Haley Maté and Hayley Rodriguez, Melrose Class of 2016, have found themselves holding the MASCAC League championship trophy as part of the Westfield State College Owls women’s lacrosse team.

HAYLEY RODRIGUEZ and Haley Maté, Melrose Class of 2016, helped the Westfield State lacrosse team win the MSCAC championship.

This year was a bit of a battle as the team decided to play a tougher non-league schedule, but the results seemed to pay off in the long run and they ended up with a record of 11-9. They lost a number of games throughout the season by a single point, including a triple overtime loss to Vassar College, a one-point loss to Bridgewater State and an overtime one-point loss to Framingham State. The second half of their season saw a dominating performance winning all 6 of their final games including avenging the loss to Bridgewater with a 14-8 win and triumphing over Framingham State in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference championship game winning that game, 13-12.

With their league win, they earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 3 National Tournament where they will travel to Connecticut’s Wesleyan College to face the #9-ranked team in the country the University of Mary Washington. Westfield was eliminated from the 2018 tournament by eventual two-time national champion Gettysburg College. Game info and live video coverage will be available at WestfieldStateOwls.com
