WAKEFIELD — National Grid has begun preliminary site preparation work on the unused portion of the MBTA right-of-way between Bennett and Salem streets. Last week, surveying of the MBTA right-of-way and marking trees within that corridor was scheduled to begin.

The work is related to a new 345-kilovolt (kV) underground transmission line that will connect Eversource’s Woburn Substation and National Grid’s Wakefield Junction Substation off Montrose Avenue. The proposed line will extend approximately 8.5 miles between two existing substations, passing through Woburn, Winchester, Stoneham, and Wakefield. The project also includes improvements within the existing fence lines of the Woburn and Wakefield Substations.

Work beginning in mid-September through November 2018 will include:

Selective clearing of the MBTA row to minimize visual impact.Digging several test pits to confirm soil conditions.Removal of abandon appliances and machinery; stacks of rails and ties, piles of asphalt and general debris discarded over the years.Removal of unused rail and ties.Installation of temporary Jersey barriers at access created due to clearing to limit dumping along the row.Additional Project information can be found on the project website, www.MA-NHSolution.com.
