BRACKETTVILLE, Texas — B. Peter Pohl, born in 1937, died just days short of his 81st birthday following a brief illness near his home in Brackettville, Texas, where he had many close friends.

His father died when he was only two, and he was raised subsequently in Wakefield, Mass. by his mother, Marion (Pohl) Young, and his grandparents, Thomas and Marietta Loughlin. After attending the University of Massachusetts, Peter joined the Army, serving all over the world including Alaska and Vietnam, ending with the rank of sergeant, and retiring after 20 years.

He took a master’s degree from Salem State College and continued a lifelong habit of learning through voracious reading. In Texas, he ran a successful landscaping business for many years and also cared for his mother in his home for the duration of her long decline. Although Peter had no children of his own, he took great interest in his nieces and nephews, and in his beloved dogs and cats.

He is survived by his sister, Elinor (Pohl) Along of Cape Cod, many nieces and nephews, and his cousin, Mary Kathryn Ball. He was predeceased by his dear sister, Marion (Pohl) Kouns. Interment will occur at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield at a later date.
