STONEHAM — The WMHS baseball team clinched a share of the Freedom Division title with a 4-1 victory in Stoneham on Thursday. That share became Wakefield’s own when Melrose fell to Burlington 3-0 yesterday.

The Warriors, coming off a electric 4-3 road win over Melrose on Tuesday, kept it rolling against the Spartans picking up their sixth consecutive victory.

Although Wakefield was outhit 9-7, Warrior starter Danny Hurley scattered those hits through a complete game, striking out five thanks in large part to his 21 first pitch strikes on the day.

The Wakefield offense had seven different batters collect a hit. Anthony DeVito led the way with two RBI’s.

While the Warriors were focused on improving as they played two tough programs in Andover and Peabody this weekend at the Jim Geanoulis Tournament, they kept an eye on the standings. With their last Middlesex League game in the books, all the Warriors could do was wait and see the result of Melrose-Burlington. Wakefield swept Burlington and finished 1-1 against Melrose.

With a league title and a ticket to the Div. 2 North State Tournament punched and ready to go, Wakefield will have one more tuneup this week as they host Lynnfield on Thursday, 4 p.m. at Walsh Field in their regular season finale.

The seedings for the tournament will be decided on Tuesday, June 4.
