Coleman, Goodchild, Tran, Armstrong, DiMascio, Yirrell named in Freedom division

WAKEFIELD — To say the Wakefield Memorial High School wrestling team was well represented when the Middlesex League wrestling coaches met recently to make this year’s all-star selections in both the Freedom and Liberty divisions is a severe understatement.

The Freedom champion Warriors had six wrestlers
selected.

Senior captains Aiden Coleman (195 lbs.), Jake Goodchild (145 lbs.) and Kevin Tran (160 lbs.) were all chosen, as were juniors Aidan Armstrong (126 lbs.), Derek DiMascio (220 lbs.) and Mike Yirrell (170 lbs.).

Wakefield head coach Ross Ickes was also recognized as the Coach of the Year.

Burlington tied the Warriors with six All-Stars as well as the Rookie of the Year in Cam Soda.

Wakefield just edged out Freedom rival Melrose as the Red Raiders had five All-Stars including the Wrestler of the Year in Hunter Adrian.

With wrestlers from Wakefield, Burlington and Melrose making up 17 of the possible 18 weight classes, Wilmington was the only other Freedom team with an All-Star as they had one selection: senior Mike DeLucia (285lbs.).

Jake Goodchild had more dual meet wins than any other Warrior this year as he went 21-2 in dual meets and 34-7 overall. The runner-up in both the Lisitano tournament and the Middlesex League tournament, Goodchild went on to finish 3rd in the Div. 3 North and 7th in the Div. 3 States. Goodchild finished his terrific Wakefield wrestling career as a two-time All-Star while racking up 90 career wins.

Kevin Tran went 19-4 in dual meets and 36-13 overall. An All-State qualifier, Tran took 4th in the Lisitano Tournament, 3rd in the Middlesex League, 3rd in Div. 3 North and 6th in D3 States. Tran finished a great Wakefield career with 53 wins.

Aiden Coleman went 17-3 in dual meets and 34-9 overall this season. The 2018 Middlesex League champ took 3rd at the Lisitano, 3rd in the D3 North and 7th at D3 States. Coleman finished his Wakefield career with 70 wins.

Those three captains meant that three of Wakefield’s four senior captains were named All-Stars. It is important to note that the fourth captain, Ryan Smith, a 2017 Freedom All-Star, missed the majority of the season with a shoulder injury, otherwise the Warriors would have surely added another All-Star to the mix.

Aidan Armstrong went 19-4 in dual meets and 30-9 overall. Armstrong was a runner-up in the Lisitano Tournament and a two-time tournament champion in 2018 as he won the Middlesex League Tournament and the Division 3 North at 126. The junior will have one more season to build on his current career win total of 59.

Mike Yirrell went 10-2 in dual meets and 24-10 overall at 170. Yirrell was the Middlesex League Champ and D3 North runner-up. Yirrell finished 4th in Div. 3 States and qualified for All-States. The junior currently has 57 career wins.

Derek DiMascio finished the season 15-1 in dual meets and 28-9 overall. The D3 North champ finished 3rd in the Lisitano Tournament, 4th in the Middlesex League Tournament and 6th in Div. 3 States. DiMascio also qualified for All-States, and now has 38 career wins.
