WAKEFIELD — The work of nine students in Advanced Placement Studio Art from Wakefield Memorial High School’s graduating Class of 2018 displayed their best work at the third annual Advanced Placement Studio Art Gallery Show, held Thursday night, May 17 at the Albion Cultural Exchange.

Advanced Placement Studio Art is a college level course divided into three paths: Drawing, 2-D and 3-D. Each student chooses one path to follow for the school year. Unlike traditional AP exams, the AP Studio Art exam is a graded portfolio that encompasses three different sub-portfolios (quality, breadth and concentration).

Students showcasing their 2-D design work were Mikayla Coombs, Maliea DiPietro, Jake Goodchild, Samantha Hartman, Sydney Hewitt, Julia McDonough, Ashley Sullivan and Mary Tannian. Julia Covelle displayed her work in drawing.

In September, the students will attend Massachusetts College of Art & Design, Champlain College, Savannah College of Art & Design among others.

As in previous years, the students had been working on their presentations for the entire year.

Visual Arts Director Joy Schilling said she was proud of the work produced and even more proud of the students.

“The students submitted their portfolios of 24 pieces each to the national Advanced Placement Board,” said Schilling. “They were rated on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the highest score. A score of 5 would give them 3 college credits.”

High school art teacher Morgan Giannotti added that she, too, was proud of the AP students and called their work “outstanding.”
